“I decided to turn to the eternal - ‘La Dame aux Camélias’ and Verdi’s beloved opera ‘La Traviata.’ I moved the action to Tbilisi, in our time. At the premiere of ‘Alfredo and Violetta,’ there were ‘enthusiastic’ applause. All forty hands were heard separately. During the curtain call, we and the audience touched each other’s noses. It was a victory!”

Rezo Gabriadze

The history of Rezo Gabriadze Marionette theatre began in 1981 with the play “Alfred and Violetta,” where the eternal love story, well-known thanks to the novel by Alexandre Dumas fils “La Dame aux Camélias” and the opera by Giuseppe Verdi “La Traviata”, was given a completely new artistic life by Rezo Gabriadze. After a long interval, the play returned to the stage of Gabriadze Theatre, but in a new form. During the year before his death, Rezo Gabriadze almost completely rewrote and renewed the play. The initial plan was finalized by the artistic director of the theatre, Leo Gabriadze, who is the director of this new performance.

The play was co-produced with the Goldoni Theater and Change Performing Arts. The world premiere took place in Theater Goldoni, Venice, in February, 2022

"More than the narrative, which is rich with local and vibrant historical references, we are captivated by the Gabriadze family's inventions"
