"The Autumn of My Springtime" is a story about Boria Gadai, a small bird with a big heart. It takes place in Kutaisi, Georgia, after the end of World War II. When Varlam, the organ-grinder dies, Boria is the only one left to take care of the old grandmother Domna. Unwittingly, Boria becomes a thief, falls in love with beautiful Ninel and undertakes many dangerous and exciting adventures. This is the story of a journey through dreams, despair, anger, and joy. It is an enchanting mixture of masterful puppetry, Georgian folk songs, dance and memories dear to the author’s heart.
"I am often asked why this performance is called The Autumn of My Springtime In WW2, Georgia lost 340,000 men. Many of them were from my hometown of Kutaisi. After the war, our city was full of widowed women dressed in black and orphaned children. At that time I was also a child, and despite the loss and sadness around me, my heart was filled with spring, while the hearts of the adults were filled with late autumn."
Rezo Gabriadze
The play "The Autumn of My Springtime" was staged in 1983. The theater's new building at 13 Shavteli Street was opened with its premiere. "My Spring's Autumn" is Rezo Gabriadze's most personal performance, where he recalls his childhood city, Kutaisi, which for a little boy, despite the difficult post-war period, represented a world filled with warmth and love. Police chief Walter Kakauridze, city chief architect Korkimelidze, doctor Minovich - real residents of 1940s Kutaisi, who became characters in Rezo's play. But Grandmother Domna remains the main center of the narrative, to whom Rezo Gabriadze dedicated his performance. It is precisely because of this personal nature of The Autumn of My Springtime that Rezo Gabriadze continuously worked on the performance. In 2002, Gabriadze staged a second production of the play in Switzerland, in collaboration with Theater VIDY-LAUSANNE. The third renewed staging of The Autumn of My Springtime was realized in 2018. Gabriadze created new scenography and added several scenes to the performance.
"It's a tragic tale, though it does conclude with a next-life-in-paradise reunion to underscore the natural anguish of life on earth"
